Women have complex needs during childbirth. In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect.
Throughout history, women relied on other women for encouragement and support before, during, and after childbirth.
Studies confirm that a doula’s presence can reduce the length of labor, the need for pain medication, the use of forceps, and even the request for an epidural! Having a doula also increases the father’s confidence during labor to better fulfill his vital role.
Doulas make the difference!
What does a doula do?
Doulas are educated and experienced in childbirth and the postpartum period and understand a family’s special needs during this time.
A doula assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth, stays with the laboring woman throughout the entire labor, provides comfort measures, and helps the woman get the information she needs to make good decisions about her birth experience.
“I started labor several days before the actual delivery, so I was mentally exhausted and stressed. Jodi was always encouraging and never doubtful that I could do it. She was great!”
